Cosmic Communication and Feline Consciousness, a performance presented on September 13th, 2024 by Erika Mayoral in a gallery at Centro Cultural Mexiquense Bicentenario, was held to commemorate the opening of the exhibition “Centennial Surrealism: Art and Psyche (From a Book by Teresa del Conde)” curated by Antonio Espinoza. The performance, guided by the artist, consisted of a series of energy channelings and healings for the cats of several volunteers from the audience. These volunteers mentioned their cats' names and displayed a photograph of them to initiate a process of communication through the artist's psychic abilities. The participating audience, comprised of approximately seventy people who attended the opening event, explored their own abilities to direct energy toward the communication and healing process for their chosen cats, following the artist's careful instructions.

 

During the performance, a series of slides were projected showing some of Remedios Varo's paintings in which cats appear in the scene: Paradise of Cats (1955), Sympathy (The Cat's Rage) (1955), Revelation or The Watchmaker (1955), Cosmic Energy (1956), Vagabond (1957), Fern Cat (1957), The Farewell (1958) and Mimicry (1960); thus framing the meaning of the piece in the context of the centenary of surrealism and taking the recurring presence of felines in the work of the Spanish artist as a starting point for the conceptualization of the action. At the same time, sounds of Tibetan singing bowls, including subtle purrs and soft meows of cats, accompanied the meditative experience throughout the energy communication process, uniting the artist's energetic words and intentions with the receptivity and psychic openness of the attendees, as well as with the consciousness of the cats who participated in the performance from a dimension different from that of physical reality.
